The Indigenous Peoples’ Data Collective (IPDC) connects Indigenous Peoples and Tribal Nations with Indigenous Data Sovereignty experts from the Indigenous Data Alliance representing the US Indigenous Data Sovereignty Network (USIDSN), the Collaboratory for Indigenous Data Governance, the Data Warriors Lab, ENRICH-Equity for Indigenous Research Coordinating Hub, the Native BioData Consortium, the Indigenous Land and Data Stewards Lab, and the Indigenous Data Exchange. Together, we connect our communities by hosting webinars, providing training, and generating resources that support the crafting of specific, locally-relevant law, policy, and infrastructure strategies for implementing Indigenous data sovereignty and Indigenous data governance for Indigenous Peoples and Tribal Nations.
Over the last decade, Indigenous Data Sovereignty has been rapidly evolving. We have moved from simple assertions that Indigenous Peoples should have control over data about their lands, communities, citizens, and cultures, to implementing Indigenous Data Governance structures that outline how institutions, including governments, can and should implement policies, procedures, and laws that protect Indigenous Peoples from extractive practices and the misuse of their data while increasing their access to and benefit from their data. Increasingly, Indigenous Peoples seek to create laws and policies that guide how their governments and other institutions and researchers engage with Indigenous data.
IPDC oversees the first Indigenous Data Champions Fellowship, supporting individuals committed to exercising IDSov and IDGov in their own communities. The fellowship builds a cohort for knowledge exchange and strengthens capacity to put IDSov and IDGov into practice. Learn more about and apply for the fellowship at the Indigenous Data Alliance.
More information on IPDC membership, activities, and how to join is coming soon.
