Rematriation as Resistance – Ku`ono`ono Wahine Waimanalo as the wa`a!

Ilima Ho-Lastimosa

Ku’ono’ono Wahine Waimanalo is a Wahine-led initiative grounded in the ancestral wisdom and practices of the Waimanalo Homestead. This program reclaims the vital roles of wahine in restoring connection with ‘aina through rematriation, a process centered on healing, responsibility, and interconnectedness. By elevating wahine knowledge and ceremony, Kuono Wahine Waimanalo cultivates wellness, food sovereignty, and cultural resurgence rooted in traditional relationships between wahine, ohana, aina, and wai. Through community guidance, the initiative creates space for wahine to revitalize cultural protocols, strengthen resilience, and honor collective strength in the face of ongoing colonial challenges. Ku’ono’ono Wahine Waimanalo embodies rematriation as active resistance, reaffirming wahine authority and nurturing sacred ties necessary for regeneration and self-determination in Waimanalo and beyond.
