Putting Data to Work: Expanding Access to Information to Empower Economic Development

| PHILIP GOVER (Northern and Southern Paiute, Pawnee, and Comanche), Policy Fellow at the Center for Indian Country Development, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis

| VANESSA PALMER, Data Director at the Center for Indian Country Development, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis

The mission of the Center for Indian Country Development at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis (CICD) is to advance the economic self-determination and prosperity of Native nations and Indigenous communities through actionable data and research that make substantial contributions to public policy. In service of this mission, we are in the midst of a major initiative to help close long-standing data gaps in Indian Country. As part of this effort, we maintain and refine a growing suite of publicly available data tools that aim to empower Native communities and decision-makers to shape their economic future. We envision broad access to public information as a critical tool for self-determination. This practical, interactive session is geared toward Indian Country businesspeople, government leaders, and community members interested in collaboratively exploring new CICD data tools to:

• Gather information from many sources to create a context-rich picture of the community, governance, infrastructure, and economic base of Native areas (Native Community Data Profiles)

• Understand national trends in Native entrepreneurship (Native Entrepreneurship Dashboard)

• See the inflow of economic activity into select reservations over time (Tribal Economic Zones)

As part of CICD’s commitment to continuously improving our data offerings based on input from Indian Country, we also welcome feedback and suggestions in this session that will directly inform updates and future tools.
