Local Contexts: Supporting Indigenous Data Sovereignty

| STEPHANY RUNNINGHAWK JOHNSON (member of the Oglala Lakota Nation), Founding Executive Director, Local Contexts

| CORRIE ROE, Director of Outreach & Strategy, Local Contexts

Local Contexts is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2010 to address the needs of Indigenous and local organizations who wanted a practical method to deal with the range of intellectual property issues that arise in relation to managing cultural heritage materials. The primary objective of Local Contexts is to enhance and legitimize locally based decision-making and Indigenous governance frameworks for determining ownership, access, and culturally appropriate conditions for sharing historical, contemporary, and future collections of cultural heritage and Indigenous data. Local Contexts Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels and Notices were created to ground intellectual and cultural property rights in cultural heritage, data, and genetic resources within digital environments. In this presentation, Local Contexts Founding Executive Director and Strategic Advisors will introduce the Local Contexts initiative and its vision for the future.
