How do we think about Indigenous Data Sovereignty for Native people in urban settings across the United States? Using an ongoing project about the housing experiences of urban Indigenous people living in cities across the country, we are thinking about how to extend Indigenous Data Sovereignty concepts to those living outside of a Tribal context or whom may not be enrolled. With funding from the Research for Indigenous Social Action and Equity (RISE) Center at University of Michigan, we currently have conducted 50 qualitative in-depth interviews with American Indian and Alaska Native people living in urban settings across the U.S., about their experiences with housing and racialization. We partnered with the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI), a Tribal Epidemiology Center, to extend the call for participation. As of now, we have had over 800 people respond! We do not propose to have any answers, but can share the small ways in which we are trying to incorporate data sovereignty in our project and seek to learn from others so we can best take care of the stories being shared.
