Measuring Health Equity through a Tribal lens: Focus on Strengths, Sovereignty, and Indigenous Identity

| DONALD WARNE, MD, MPH (Oglala Lakota), Professor and Co-Director, Center for Indigenous Health; Provost Fellow, Indigenous Health Policy, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University

Indigenous Peoples have been conducting research for thousands of years, and Indigenous Knowledges have made substantial contributions to modern science and medicine. Establishing a national standard in the US for Indigenous data governance requires a deep-rooted understanding of cultural differences in research design and the types of data that are collected. Indigenous stakeholders, leaders, academics, and community members need to be directly involved as we create an Indigenous data standard via nation-to-nation partnerships between Indigenous Peoples and federal government and other. Respect for Indigenous Peoples’ laws, policies, systems and sovereignty are essential components of developing shared data futures with federal and state governments and other potential partners. The overarching goal is to establish datasets, research projects, and programming that will promote Indigenous Health Equity in a culturally relevant manner.
