In June 2023, Seven Directions at the University of Washington hosted an informal Affinity Tribal Data Systems group meeting as part of their Our Nations, Our Journey conference. The theme of the conference was healing from the opioid epidemic through strength-based approaches and Indigenous data sovereignty. Representatives from Native Nations that were actively engaged in strengthening their systems across sectors (e.g., judicial systems, behavioral health, health care, public health, education, social services) came together with the shared goal of community wellness. This group has continued as part of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Tribal Care Coordination Dashboard Project: Coeur Adolescent Support Team (CAST) project, funded by the Systems for Action program at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. We would like to share our successes, challenges, and provide time for discussion. Successes are establishing a tribally driven data systems supports evaluation of prevention and intervention services, tribal leadership engagement, and ensures governance of data. Challenges faced are initiation of data sharing agreements, identifying technology companies familiar with tribal sovereignty, and ensuring federal protections. The purpose of this session is to host a roundtable on the topic of tribal data systems alignment. Attendees will be asked to share their successes and challenges when developing an interoperable tribal data system. Questions include: What are other Native nations doing? What has been their journey? What has and hasn’t worked? The anticipated outcome of the session will be to support a growing Affinity group with strategies, resources, and subject matter experts for tribal data systems alignment.
